Historical authenticity
Today, we are used to currency that changes regularly, with older coins quickly disappearing from circulation. In the Middle Ages, however, things worked very differently.
Coins often remained in circulation for decades, and it was completely normal for newly minted coins to be used alongside much older ones. For example, Prague groschen were used from the 14th century well into the time of the Thirty Years’ War.
Newer coins were often smaller and contained less precious metal, but older, higher-quality coins did not disappear. On the contrary – they were often valued even more.
In times of crisis, such as the Hussite Wars, minting could stop entirely. The Kutná Hora mint, one of the most important in Europe, was inactive for extended periods, which meant that coins already in circulation continued to be used for many years.
That is why it is historically accurate for different types and ages of coins to appear together in your game world – just as they did in reality.

A Caravan in the Desert — Coins That Everyone Believes
The wind swept over the dunes like a silent wave. The caravan stopped without a command — it was simply the moment when trade is done slowly.
The old merchant unrolled a cloth on the sand. On it appeared spices, glass, small packets of resin, and finally a scale.
The young man beside him nervously held a bag.
“How much?” he asked.
The man on the other side didn’t answer. He just held out his hand.
The young man poured out a handful of coins. Various. Foreign. Shiny and worn.
The man could barely see them. He ran his fingers through them — and then stopped. He separated one coin.
A thaler.
He turned it to the sun. The profile of the monarch was smoothed, but still legible.
He smiled for the first time.
Without bargaining, he placed the goods on the cloth.
The young man looked at his teacher in surprise.
“Why this one?” he whispered.
The old merchant did not take the coin immediately. He just stared at it for a while.
“Because they will accept this one across three other deserts,” he said.
The wind stirred up the sand. The caravan started moving again.
The young man looked at the coin once more.
And for the first time he understood that the world could have one coin.
African markets — global coins
The market was noisy, colorful, and endless. Voices, animals, fabrics, metal, laughter — all at once.
The young merchant held his bag tighter than necessary. He had come from afar and tried not to show it.
At the first stall he took out coins.
The vendor shook his head.
At the second too.
At the third he could already feel his breathing quickening.
The older woman sitting behind the bowls looked at him for a long time. Not at him—at his hand.
“Show me,” she said.
He untied the pouch and poured the coins into his palm.
The woman ran her fingers through them slowly. Then she pulled one out.
A thaler.
She turned him around. She nodded. And began to fill the bowl.
“We’ll take this,” she said simply.
The young man watched in confusion as the same coin he had seen at the port worked here, thousands of miles from home.
“You know it?” he asked.
The woman smiled faintly.
“Everyone who does business knows this one.”
The coin jingled against the bowl.
A coin as a passage
The gate was closed even before they reached it.
The guard didn’t move. The spear remained across the road.
“The city is closed.”
“We need to go,” the man said calmly.
“Everyone needs to.”
The wind rustled their cloaks. It was getting dark behind them.
A woman in the group reached into her pocket. She said nothing for a moment. She just rolled the coin between her fingers as if considering more than the price.
Then she placed it on the stone between them.
A thaler.
The guard didn’t move right away. She looked at the profile. At the edges. At the silver that had seen many paths.
“From where?” she asked.
“From the path,” the woman said.
A moment of silence.
Then the guard took the coin. The spear was raised.
The gate opened just enough for them to pass through.
“Don’t delay,” she murmured.
The group entered. The last one turned around.
The gate was closing. The coin disappeared in the shadow of the cloak.
And he thought that some doors had no key.
They had value.
