Worlds and Their Coins

Charlemagne denarius coinCharlemagne – Early Medieval Darkness

Set in the 9th century, this world reflects the transition from Roman traditions to early medieval Europe.

Charlemagne is a world in the darkness of the early Middle Ages in the 9th century. As a small coin we use the copper solidus (sou), instead of the small silver iron denarius, as a large silver silver denarius, which Charlemagne introduced as the basic currency and linked it to the Roman denarii. As a small gold we have the Byzantine solidus and the large gold Carolingian gold (denarius).

  • Copper: solidus (sou)
  • Small silver: iron denar
  • Large silver: silver denar
  • Small gold: Byzantine solidus
  • Large gold: Carolingian gold coin

Charlemagne’s reform established the denar as a key currency across Europe.

Viking Raven pennyVikings – Trade and Raids

A world shaped by both trade and conquest.

The Vikings are a very similar world in time, but the basis of the currency is the penny minted by the Vikings in Danelaw (copper, silver and gold) and mixed in with the silver Carolingian denarius and the Byzantine gold solidus, which came to the Viking world both through trade and during raids on the mainland and the Mediterranean.

  • Core coin: Viking penny (in multiple materials)
  • Additional: Carolingian silver denar
  • High value: Byzantine gold solidus

A more centralized and royal monetary system.

Middle Ages of England and France is a different cultural circle. As a small coin there is the penny, but it could also be the French sou (solidus) or liard. As a smaller silver coin we use the Ecu argent, the large French Liver ((Tours grosz). The small gold is the Ecu introduced by Louis IX and the large gold is the Noble Edward III.

  • Copper: penny / sou / liard
  • Small silver: écu argent
  • Large silver: livre (Tours gros)
  • Small gold: écu d’or

Crusades – Between Worlds

The Crusaders are a special world – on the border of Byzantium (solidus), the Orient (Saladin’s gold coins and silver) and the West (Templar coins)

A hybrid system combining:

  • Byzantine coins
  • Islamic coins (Saladin)
  • Western (Templar) coins

A unique mix of cultures and currencies.

Let’s explore the gold of the Crusaders

Byzantium & Great Moravia

Eastern and early Slavic influences.

Byzantium is an empire that we all know and that, strictly speaking, never existed. In fact, it was the Roman Empire that continued until the fall of Constantinople. But we are all used to the name Byzantium, even though it did not spread until 100 years later. In the early Middle Ages, it was the culturally and economically strongest region of Europe and it is not surprising that all the early medieval Slavic states, such as Great Moravia, fell under its influence.

  • Copper: solidus variants
  • Silver: denar / sestertius
  • Gold: Byzantine solidus

Hussite Wars – Collapse of Order

Early 15th century Central Europe in crisis.

The Hussite Wars represent the first half of the 15th century in Central Europe. As gold coins, florins and ducats continued (both were minted by Emperor Sigismund in Kremnica), with grosz it was worse because the mint in Kutná Hora did not mint new coins during the wars. So there were old grosz and parvus, smaller silver coins in circulation. However, both were counterfeited a lot because there was no strong state power to prosecute counterfeiting. There were a lot of grosz and parvus in circulation with a low silver content. A special small coin was the so-called The flute, which we have in the set as a patinated copper version of the parvo, was actually a slightly uglier coin with very little value.

  • Copper: flútek (low-value parvus)
  • Small silver: parvus
  • Large silver: groschen (often debased)
  • Small gold: florin
  • Large gold: ducat of Sigismund

Currency was unstable, often debased, and widely forged.
