Where the Wind Stands Still
The grass moved before they did.
A long wave across the plains — silver-green under the morning light.
“Wind’s turning,” said Eadric, watching the horizon.
“Good,” replied Halmar. “Means it’s not just us thinking about it.”
They stood beside their horses, not yet mounted.
No rush.
There was always time before the ride.
“You think they’ll come this way?” a younger rider asked.
Halmar shrugged.
“They always come some way.”
A few quiet laughs.
Eadric pulled a coin from his pouch and rolled it across his knuckles.
Silver. Worn smooth at the edges.
“Got this in a trade near the border,” he said. “Man from Gondor. Said it was the same kind they use in Minas Tirith.”
“Looks lighter,” someone said.
“It is,” Eadric nodded. “Different land.”
He caught the coin and closed his hand around it.
“Still spends the same,” he added.
A horse snorted softly.
Another stamped the ground.
They moved among them without speaking — checking straps, adjusting reins, resting hands briefly on warm necks.
No ceremony.
Just habit.
“Orders?” the young one asked.
Halmar glanced at him.
“We ride out,” he said. “See what’s there.”
“And if it’s bad?”
Halmar smiled, just a little.
“Then we ride faster.”
More laughter this time.
Short.
Real.
The wind shifted again.
Stronger now.
Carrying something with it.
“Smoke,” Eadric said.
They all looked.
Far off, just above the line where the land dipped—
a thin dark thread.
Halmar nodded.
“Alright,” he said. “That’s enough waiting.”
They mounted.
One by one.
No signal.
No shout.
The line formed naturally.
Not perfect.
But right.
Eadric slipped the coin back into his pouch.
“After this,” the young rider said, “we head back?”
Halmar looked ahead.
“We always head back,” he said.
A pause.
“Question is how long it takes.”
They nudged their horses forward.
At first, a walk.
Then a trot.
The grass parted.
The wind rose.
And soon – they were no longer men standing in a field,
but riders of the Mark,
moving across the plains of Middle-earth,
exactly as they were meant to.
